Pakistan Diabetes Prevention Program (PakDPP) is a pioneering initiative by the Pakistan Endocrine Society (PES) from November 2019 to combat the increasing burden of diabetes in the country lead by Prof. Abdul Basit (Secertary General, Diabetic Association of Pakistan (DAP), President, Diabetes in Asia Study Group (DASG) and Prof. Arshad Hussain (Consultant physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Northwest General Hospital, KPK), with the dedicated support of their Core Team Members, Dr. Ibrar Ahmed (Consultant physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar), Dr. Asima Khan Niazi (Public health program director, and Diabetologist Sindh Government Hospital, Liaquat Abad, Karachi), and Dr. Nazish Waris (Manager, Pakistan Diabetes Prevention Program, Karachi). PakDPP aims to prevent Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) through a comprehensive nationwide primary prevention effort.
Ethical approval from the National Bioethics Committee (NBC) in November 2022 marked a milestone for PakDPP, which targets individuals aged 20 and above with Pakistani nationality for inclusion. The program's diagnostic approach includes fasting plasma glucose (FPG) tests and the collection of baseline data using a structured questionnaire. Blood samples for various parameters are including hemoglobin (Hb), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, coupled with the measurement of HbA1c using point-of-care technology are collected free of cost to support the program's diagnostic framework
Activities and Progress
The activities started from from May 2023 and to date, progress reports indicate successful screening of approximately 1200 participants, including 200 cases of prediabetes. Tailored interventions, including education sessions on diet and lifestyle, have been implemented for these individuals, with a focus on long-term evaluation to assess the program's impact. These interventions have been delivered through both face-to-face interactions and online platforms, ensuring accessibility and effectiveness for all participants. Additionally, we have provided relevant literature to support their understanding and management of their condition.
Follow-up of Pre-diabetics
A pivotal aspect of PakDPP lies in its long-term evaluation, exemplified by the repetition of diagnostic tests after a year. This phase seeks to quantify the number of subjects with pre-diabetes who successfully reverted to normal glucose levels by diligently adhering to lifestyle recommendations and dietary advice. As the primary endpoint, this outcome holds the promise of uncovering the tangible impact of PakDPP.
