The Itabuna Diabetes Mutirão (Diabetes Task Force) was created in 2004 and has been held annually since then, aimed at providing care and support to people with diabetes. The community in general is offered guidance and information about diabetes, in addition to blood glucose tests, and for people with diabetes we offer diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, vascular, cardiological, nephrological assessments and biochemical tests. Becoming one of the largest prevention, awareness and tracking programs for complications in Brazil, with important involvement of the entire community.

Reaching its 20th edition this year, the Itabuna Diabetes Mutirão mobilizes employees, residents, doctors and institutions to combat diabetes, inspiring more than 30 cities across Brazil to hold the event in the same model, with the support and leadership of NGO United for Diabetes. More than 30 thousand patients have been treated in these 20 years, with close to 3 thousand patients with severe diabetic retinopathy or diabetic macular edema, patients with more serious eye disease have undergone free retinal laser photocoagulation treatment, preventing blindness for many of them.

After the pandemic, the use of telemedicine with digital retinography and artificial intelligence with portable digital retinography to track Diabetic Retinopathy was initiated in an innovative way, which brought a great difference in amplification and agility in the capacity to provide care with less need for specialized human resources present. This has been changing, our joint efforts are getting better and better with the exponential evolution of AI, continuing after the pandemic.

In the year 2023, we went through a process of evolution towards a digitalization process of the entire service flow of the Mutirão de Itabuna, where all clinical data captured are compiled by an intelligent digital form adapted to a complex multidisciplinary flow of assessment not only of the retina, but also other complications, such as heart, kidney and diabetic foot, building a complex database in real time.

This year, 2024, we will reach the 20-year mark of the Diabetes Mutirão, which will be a great moment for this story of fighting for the health and quality of life of people with diabetes and preparing health professionals and the entire community to provide it in a sustainable way. more effective and humane with this disease that has such an impact on the entire planet.

This year the 20th DIABETES MUTIRÃO will take place on November 9th, a Saturday morning, from 8am to 1pm, at Hospital Beira Rio (Avenida Mario Padre 185) and Praça Rio Cachoeira. On November 10th, on Sunday morning at 7am we will celebrate health in our 10th BLUE PEDALADA and 14th BLUE GYM CLASS which will take place at the same time, at Praça Rio Cachoeira.

The NGO Unidos Pelo Diabetes (UPD) (www.unidospelodiabetes.com.br) was created in 2016 with the aim of managing the entire construction of the Diabetes Mutirão and several other associated mobilization, training and education actions in diabetes. For more than a decade, it has been helping to transfer Know-How for the multiplication and coordinated implementation of several Diabetes campaigns in Brazil, through consultancy and nationwide courses that take place within an important congress every year, and this model has already been replicated simultaneously by more than 30 cities in Brazil.
