Date: 14th November, 2024
Location: Jagannadhpuram Village
Organized by: Faculty, PG’s (Dept. of Community Medicine)
Participants: interns, 2nd-year MBBS students (2023-2024)
Objective:
The session aimed to raise awareness about Type 2 Diabetes and its associated complications, providing local residents with valuable information on prevention, early detection, and managing risk factors. The event also focused on promoting healthier lifestyle choices, including dietary modifications.
Activities and Participation:
• Screening for Type 2 Diabetes: A health check-up station was set up for free screening of blood sugar levels, enabling residents to assess their risk for Type 2 Diabetes.
• Interactive Education: 2nd-year MBBS students actively interacted with the local community, explaining the risk factors (such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, family history, and obesity), complications (like cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, and nerve issues), and the importance of early detection. Interns have done a role play highlighting the importance of screening and also throwing some light on lifestyle modifications.
Educational Tools and Materials:
• Food Models and Flashcards: These visual aids helped explain the concept of low glycemic foods and the benefits of a balanced diet for diabetes management.
• Posters and Placards: Informational posters on diabetes risk factors, symptoms, and preventive measures were displayed, ensuring the message reached a wide audience.
Key Messages Delivered:
• Prevention is Key: Emphasis was placed on lifestyle changes that can prevent the onset of Type 2 Diabetes, such as incorporating regular physical activity, reducing sugar intake, and consuming foods with a low glycemic index.
• Healthy Eating: The community was educated on the importance of consuming foods that help maintain stable blood sugar levels. The role of fiber-rich, whole foods like vegetables, legumes, and whole grains was highlighted, alongside the need to avoid processed foods.
• Regular Monitoring: The importance of regular health check-ups and blood sugar monitoring was underscored, particularly for individuals with a family history of diabetes or those experiencing early symptoms.
Community Engagement:
• The villagers actively participated in discussions, asking questions about managing their health and sharing their concerns. The students and interns provided personalized advice and information based on individual needs.
• The local residents were encouraged to adopt healthier habits and seek medical help if they noticed symptoms of diabetes, such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and slow wound healing.
Impact and Conclusion:
The session was well-received, with a high level of engagement from the community. By empowering individuals with knowledge about diabetes prevention and management, the event contributed to fostering a more health-conscious mindset in the village.
