Mutirão do Diabetes de Itabuna (20th Itabuna-Brazil Diabetes Campaign)
Screening for diabetes complications Start Date: November 9, 2024End Date: November 9, 2024
The Itabuna Diabetes Campaign (Mutirão do Diabetes de Itabuna) is an important action to prevent Diabetes and track its complications that occurs in Brazil. It is carried out by the NGO Unidos Pelo Diabetes (a FENAD member) and Hospital Beira Rio, involving the entire community in an action known throughout the country, in celebration of World Diabetes Day, with support from the main health entities in Brazil, such as the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology, the Brazilian Diabetes Society, Instituto da Visão - IPEPO and FENAD, among others. It is considered the largest and most complete campaign to prevent diabetes and its complications in Brazil.
Reaching its 20th edition this year, the Itabuna Diabetes Campaign, which took place on the 9th and 10th of November, mobilized around 500 volunteers, including: university students, health professionals, doctors and institutions in the fight against diabetes, inspiring more of 30 cities spread across Brazil to hold the event using the same model, with the support and leadership of the NGO Unidos Pelo Diabetes. More than 30 thousand patients have been treated in these almost 20 years, with close to 3 thousand patients with severe diabetic retinopathy or diabetic macular edema, patients with more serious eye disease have undergone free retinal laser photocoagulation treatment, preventing blindness for many of them.
This year, around 700 patients with diabetes were assisted with fundus assessment through a digital retinography system, telemedicine and the use of an Artificial Intelligence algorithm, and patients with retinal damage were examined in person by a retina specialist. All approximately 700 patients had their feet evaluated to detect and stage the diabetic foot. Patients with high-risk diabetic foot or significant diabetic retinopathy were diverted to a more complex care flow, where they underwent laboratory tests, renal, cardiology, carotid evaluation and retinal treatment with laser photocoagulation or angiological evaluation if necessary. All patient results and follow-up were linked and assured by the public health system, where the most serious cases will be referred for treatment with permanent monitoring in the basic network of the Municipal Health Department.
Since 2023, we have been going through a process of evolution towards a digitalization process of the entire service flow of the “Mutirão de Itabuna”, where all clinical data captured are compiled by an intelligent digital form adapted to a complex multidisciplinary flow of assessment not only retina, but also other complications, such as heart, kidney and diabetic foot, building a complex database in real time.
In Rio Cachoeira public square, the “City of Diabetes”, a multidisciplinary diabetes health fair, with various educational services in Diabetes, such as: as blood glucose tests, a nutrition workshop, oral health, insulin use, a diabetic foot workshop, in addition to the Rotary and Lions Club stands, with guidance campaigns and distribution of educational material. In this year we had a specialized in Diabetes Education stand, where classes were developed training for patients and healthcare professionals, in a program run by the NGO UPD in partnership with FENAD and WDF.
More than 1000 blood glucose tests were carried out to detect new cases, as well as using a smart application to carry out a questionnaire on the risk of developing diabetes in the next 10 years - FindRisk. Patients with high blood glucose or high risk of developing diabetes were evaluated by the nutrition team or underwent endocrinological evaluation in addition to point of care Glycated Hemoglobin tests.
